Get Found! 6 Top Tips for creating a more effective LinkedIn Profile.

If you want to be found and considered for a job opportunity, create an effective LinkedIn profile. The truth is that using LinkedIn has become an integral part of my job description as an executive search and recruitment consultant.  I have found great people on behalf of my clients using LinkedIn and have connected with good business opportunities and inspiring people. With all the connecting I was doing, it was evident that for best results, I needed to update and refine my own profile.   In doing so, I thought about how I search for people on LinkedIn and did a little research on ‘expert’ advice.

To save you time doing the same – Here are my 6 Top Tips:

  1. LinkedIn is a search engine!  If you want to be found you must incorporate  and repeat the keywords that somebody would use to find a person like you.
  1. Target your audience: Create your profile relative to what you want to achieve by being on LinkedIn. Keep it fresh and update it accordingly
  1. Make a strong first impression:  According to the experts, its best to use a professionally taken, headshot (clearly I still have some work to do on mine).  Ensure that your spelling is correct, that your words are concise and that your content is easy to understand. You might like to consider using the multi-media options on offer.
  1. Include your achievements: Your profile is a great opportunity to gain the edge in a competitive job market, so ensure that prospective employers, connections and recruiters understand the impact that you can make.  Make sure you include your career and personal achievements and consider including  ways in which you have made a positive difference to the community.
  1. Enhance your professional credibility with recommendations: Great recommendations from reputable people will enhance your professional credibility.  If you are going to ask for a recommendation, maximize the opportunity by letting people know the particular areas you would like to be recommended for.  (By the same token only recommend people that you respect – your recommendation of them is a reflection of your own professionalism)
  1. Keep your profile up to date:  An out of date profile can often be a missed opportunity.
